Visit Fort Morgan and Learn About Our History

Fort Morgan, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, is a decommissioned fort from the Civil War. The fort is located on a peninsula jutting out into Mobile Bay, and it is currently operated by the Alabama Historical Commission.

The fort was commissioned in 1834 to protect the city of Mobile from naval threat. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan. Construction began in 1836 but was abandoned due to budget cutbacks in 1842.

Mobile was never attacked during the Civil War, but Confederate troops were stationed at Fort Morgan throughout the war. The fort soon became a prison for Union soldiers captured at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The Battle of Mobile Bay was one of four major engagements that led to Gen. Robert E. Lee’s decision to surrender at Appomattox in 1865.

Following the war, the United States government resumed construction on Fort Morgan and it was completed by 1868. Confederate soldiers who died at Mobile during the war are buried next to Union troops in nearby Magnolia Cemetery.

Construction of jetties extending into the bay increased the size of the peninsula and helped produce a sandy beach near the fort. The city of Gulf Shores now occupies this area. Click here to learn more information about it!
