The stories of this seaside village, its inhabitants, their lives, and their means of subsistence are told in this local history museum. There are a range of permanent displays as well as special exhibits to see. “Hurricane Hunters” takes you on a thrilling flight through the eye of a hurricane. The house, which was built before World War II, was first used as a beach house by Valerie Cole’s family from Mobile, Alabama. The building, which was originally located on West Beach, was donated to the city after Hurricane Frederic hit the area in 1979. Originally built as a library, the structure has been in use by the city since 1982, when it was converted into a youth center. The land donated by Claude O’Connor and Wade and Pat Ward for the construction of the building made it feasible to choose the location for the structure.
