Fairhope Museum of History: An Awesome Place for History Buffs

The Fairhope Museum of History, originally known as the Fairhope Historical Museum and located in Fairhope, Baldwin County, is a local history museum that preserves and interprets artifacts from Fairhope’s past while also educating visitors through exhibitions and community outreach programs. It was established in 1992 as the Fairhope Historical Museum. This name change occurred in 2008 when the museum relocated to the recently rebuilt Old City Hall building and was granted its current location. In the city-owned museum, visitors can learn about Fairhope’s political, social, and naval history, as well as about the city’s current position in Alabama culture, history, and the arts. Several permanent and rotating exhibits are featured in the Fairhope Museum of History, which focus on the history, culture, art, geography, politics, and naval legacy of the city of Fairhope. Permanent exhibits include the “Hall of Mayors,” which contains oil paintings of every mayor of Fairhope, as well as an exhibit dedicated to the Fairhope Courier, the town’s local newspaper, and an exhibit of model ships and the Middle Bay Lighthouse. Special events include the “Fairhope Jazz Festival,” which takes place every summer. Along with maritime tools and equipment, exhibits on Fairhope’s early businesses, founding families, and status as a “Single Tax Colony” are on display. Other topics covered include the history of Fairhope’s jail, the history of arts and literature in Fairhope, the history of the railroad in the area, and information on the annual Jubilee.
