Conde Charlotte Museum, A Must visit for history fans

The Conde Charlotte Museum House, also known as the House of Five Flags, is one of the oldest historical sites in Mobile, Mobile County. The house was built in 1822 to serve as Mobile’s first courthouse and jail. The house is located in the heart of Fort Condé Village on Theatre Street. The house gives a glimpse into the life of people and events that have shaped Mobile. The property has taken on different forms since it originated. It was a courthouse, a jail, a home when Jonathan Kirkbride bought the building in 1849. 

Kirkbride, being an expert builder, designed the House as it is now constructing it with the same old foundation, cell doors and converting it into a more Greek Revival style mansion, with a two-story portico, Doric and Corinthian columns, interior chimneys, a porch, etc…, and it remained in the family until 1905 before being bought B. The house is known as the House of Five Flags because it interprets Mobile’s history under the flags of five countries that have ruled the city which are France, England, Spain, the Confederate States, and the United States of America. Rooms in the house each represent one of the countries/flags. There is a French sitting room and bedroom, a Spanish-themed garden behind the house, Confederate parlors, a British commandant’s bedroom, and an American Federal dining room. Even though the house has survived natural disasters and gone through a lot of renovations, the majority of the interior remains original with the rooms, hall, 19th-century kitchen, and relics like old travel chests, old wedding dresses, old appliances, clocks, antique furnishings and more.
